University Grants Commission and All India Council for Technical Education, UGC and AICTE have decided to work together. In a move that is expected to improve the working, both UGC and AICTE have decided to adopt the ‘cluster approach’ to deal with functions that are largely similar.

Under this ‘cluster approach,’ the officers of UGC and AICTE will be clubbed most likely under one department. This department will then deal with all functions that are largely similar in nature. Most of these functions will be with regards to higher education policies like research, training and so on.

According to a PTI report, the decision to adopt the ‘cluster approach’ was taken at the meeting of all the bureau heads of technical education and higher education regulators. There, UGC Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar said, “In the meeting both the regulators agreed to work mutually in areas of research and innovation, e-governance, translation of books in regional languages and examination reforms, among others.”
