The Security Council has adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for another year, till Aug. 31, 2023. Resolution 2650, which won the unanimous support of the 15-member Council, notes that the situation in Lebanon continues to constitute a threat to international peace and security, Xinhua news agency reported.
It commends the positive role of UNIFIL, whose deployment together with the Lebanese armed forces has helped to establish a new strategic environment in southern Lebanon, and reiterates the Security Council’s call for Israel and Lebanon to support a permanent ceasefire and a long-term solution.
