Despite Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) elimination from the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Sunday (May 21) after a defeat to Gujarat Titans at their iconic home venue, M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Virat Kohli created history by scoring his second century of the season.
By virtue of the knock, Kohli created history by becoming the first player in IPL history to score seven IPL tons. Kohli is now the outright holder of the record for most IPL centuries in history. Kohli broke the long-standing record of Chris Gayle, who had scored six IPL centuries in his legendary career.
After Kohli’s massive achievement, Gayle reacted cheekily and joked that he would come back from retirement to take his crown. Gayle and Kohli were teammates at RCB for six years when the West Indies batter played for RCB from 2011 to 2017.
“Never doubt Virat Kohli. Fantastic innings, well played, you know, he has put his team in a winning position,” said Gayle on Jio Cinema.
“Virat and Faf batted really well, but it was all about Virat Kohli… Fantastic innings by Virat, he has passed the Universe Boss. I am coming back out of retirement and I will see you next year Virat,” he added.
